What towels are good for allergic skin?

We have mentioned many times that flax is a friend of atopic skin, allergic and prone to irritation. In order to prove what we said, we decided to analyze various popular fibers – mainly from the point of view of security. In this set appeared popular microfiber, praised bamboo, and, of course, reliable linen. So let’s look for the answer to the question What towels are good for allergic skin?

ALLERGY – WHAT TOWELS ARE GOOD FOR ALLERGIC SKIN?

Allergic skin both for adults and children requires natural and delicate fibers. By this name we mean not only the origin of the original raw material, but also the way it is obtained, dyed, and mixed with various (often cheaper) admixtures. This applies especially to towels, which directly touch our skin. These what is important should be not only absorbent but also hygroscopic. It is the latter ability that prevents harmful bacteria from multiplying on the surface of the fabric. In addition, the structure of the towel must be gentle and non-irritating (such as waffle towels), and their care should be based solely on natural remedies.

Microfibre

We have come to the conclusion that microfiber is an ideal option for allergic skin – including baby skin. This is quite a surprising hypothesis, considering that we are talking about synthetic fibers. Polymers and polyamides (e. g. nylon) as well as polyester admixtures are used to produce these microfibres. While this mixture works great as sportswear – mainly due to its ability to absorb moisture – it is not recommended for the production of towels. Why?

Let’s compare with each other the properties of a swimsuit and a towel. Both of these elements touch the skin, both are in contact with water, and both are microfiber, but their application is completely different, right? After all, microfiber – like any synthetic – does not enjoy natural properties, and as a result – generates an ideal environment for the development of microorganisms and bacteria. These, upon contact with allergic skin, can cause a number of unpleasant symptoms – rash, redness, or excessive dryness.

Bamboo fiber

It is a very tightly woven, smooth material with a specific finish. It is a soft, skin-safe fabric. As long as the manufacturer does not add artificial or synthetic admixtures – successfully suitable for allergy sufferers and infants. However, it is worth noting that these fibers are not durable. With regular use and washing, they quickly lose their shape, and discolor and, crucially, they may lose their absorption properties. So if the manufacturer uses fibers from mechanical production, it is more than certain that the towel will stretch or snatch over time.

Linen

Of course, flax must be included in this list. These fibers are distinguished by both excellent absorption and hygroscopic abilities, thanks to which moisture is dissipated to the outside. This means that bacteria and microorganisms will not have time to multiply, and the fabric itself acquires the title of anti-allergic. The delicacy of flax goes hand in hand with durability. Even frequent washing, drying in the sun or wet ironing does not damage the fibers, so you can enjoy its softness and naturalness for many years.

These fibers additionally dry quickly, are elastic and wonderfully envelop even the most demanding skin. Therefore, in the ranking of these three fabrics, a linen towel is the safest and most cost-effective (price vs. quality) option.
