Among this year’s new products from so linen! are linen shirts, which are the perfect complement to our airy tops and dresses. Their choice is an ideal alternative to polyester, which floods the market of the clothing industry and – unfortunately – negatively affects the environment. So, which shirt is better?

What is a polyester shirt made of?

Polyester is a synthetic polymer that is used to produce not only fabrics, but also… bottles. It is a type of plastic with a strong chemical resistance. In the textile industry, polyester is valued for its strength, durability and ability to hold its shape. In addition, it is very inexpensive, so the manufacturer is able to produce many products at low cost. However, this does not mean that a polyester shirt on a store rack is equally cheap. Unfortunately, many brands sell polyester clothing at prohibitive prices, carrying a huge profit margin. So in the end, we may get expensive plastic that wreaks havoc on our planet – especially in the context of rivers and the animals that live in them. The Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences also points out that plastic fragmentation, which is caused by mechanical and biochemical factors, results in the emission of microplastics, the particles of which then migrate out of the river environment – for example, in living organisms. Thus, one decision involves an avalanche of subsequent, extremely negative ones.

What do you need to know about polyester?

  • Polyester “”doesn’t breathe”” as well as natural fabrics. This can lead to excessive sweating and moisture buildup on the surface of the skin.
  • Polyester is more likely to accumulate static electricity, which can cause the fabric to stick to the body.
  • It can also trap odors, especially after intense exercise.
  • It does not absorb moisture, so polyester towels are not effective and pleasant for wet skin.
  • Polyester is a synthetic fabric that comes from petroleum products. Its production can have a negative impact on the environment. It is estimated that its decomposition process can take up to 500 years.
  • Over time, polyester can lose its shape, become shinier and stiffer.
  • Polyester is heat-sensitive, which means it can shrink, deform or melt if it is exposed to too much heat during ironing or drying.

How about a linen shirt?

Linen is a natural fiber, obtained from the stems of the plant. It is one of the oldest fibers, having been cultivated and used as far back as ancient times. Linen is characterized by its high strength, heat conductivity and excellent ability to absorb moisture, making it ideal for summer clothing. Linen fabrics are prized for their natural appearance, as well as their cooling properties. For many years, it has been used to treat wounds – mainly for its antibacterial and anti-allergenic properties.

What is a linen shirt like?

  • Linen – the shirt is extremely breathable, making it an ideal choice for warm and humid days. It helps regulate body temperature, making it more comfortable to wear in autumn and winter as well.
  • Linen – the shirt absorbs moisture (sweat) well and quickly releases it, which helps keep the skin dry and fresh.
  • Linen fibers are strong and durable, which means that a linen shirt can last for many years.
  • Linen has natural antibacterial properties, which helps reduce the development of unpleasant odors.
  • It is safe for the planet – no pesticides or chemical dyes are used in its production.

Of course, both linen and polyester shirts have their place in the fashion world. The choice, as always, is up to consumers. However, it’s worth remembering that every decision we make can have an impact on the environment, and supporting local businesses generates competition for the mostly harmful massproduction.
