HOW TO CHOOSE CURTAIN GATHER?

The width of the curtains is defined by the gathering of the fabric, and the gathering of the fabric is selected according to the curtain’s function. Sounds complicated? We’ll explain in a moment!

Let’s start with what matters most when choosing curtains – their function. If the curtains are to serve only a decorative function and are pushed to the sides of the window all the time, or are on one curtain rod with a net curtain that covers the window all the time, there is no need to choose a large gathering. A heavily draped fabric will add unnecessary weight to the window and take a few centimeters of space from the room.

In this case, it is enough to measure the width of the curtain rod and multiply it by 1.5. We divide the obtained result into two, thus obtaining the width of two curtain panels (if we want to have classic curtains sliding to the sides). Formula below:

  • 1.5 times gather – recommended for curtains with a decorative function

How to measure the width of the curtains – the formula for the width of the curtains when 1.5 times gather:

curtain rod width x 1.5 ÷ 2 (number of panels)

2 times gather is the most popular and most frequently chosen option. Such gathering works well when we use curtains both in the opened version, e.g. during the day and in the closed version, e.g. at night to ensure privacy for the household members or during a very sunny day, thus limiting the amount of sunlight falling into the room.

In this case, we also measure the width of the curtain rod, but multiply it this time by 2. We divide the obtained result by two, obtaining the width of two curtain panels. If we want to move the curtain only to one side of the window, the obtained result will be the entire width of the curtain panel. Formula below:

  • 2 times gather – recommended for “day-night” curtains

How to measure the width of curtains – the formula for the width of curtains when 2 times gather:

curtain rod width x 2 ÷ 2 (number of panels)

Strong gathering is recommended for curtains and net curtains made of thin fabrics with a loose weave. Such gathering is selected for curtains when we want to obtain the effect of a heavily draped fabric or when the fabric is thin and the lack of strong gathering would make the curtain not provide privacy. Typically, such curtains are sewn from a single piece of fabric and their possible division into panels may be dictated by practical considerations, e.g. easy access to open a window. Strong gathering is not recommended for curtains made of heavy and thick fabrics. The gather effect may be opposite to the desired one and instead of a beautifully wavy curtain we will have a heavy sheet of fabric on the window. In addition, the weight of the fabric that our curtain rod and curtain attachments must bear is also an important thing.

In this case, we measure the width of the curtain rod and multiply it by 3. The obtained result is possibly divided into two, obtaining the width of two curtain panels. If the curtain is to cover the window constantly, the result will be the full width of the curtain panel. Formula below:

  • 3 times gather – recommended for curtains or day curtains that constantly cover the window

How to measure the width of curtains – wzór the formula for the width of the curtains when 3 times gather:

curtain rod width x 3 ÷ 2 (number of panels)

ATTENTION! The width of the curtains is measured in relation to the width of the curtain rod, not the width of the window, or even more so, the distance from the wall to the wall.

SUMMARY

How to measure the width of the curtains? Below is a small summary of the most important tips!

  • the width of the curtains is adjusted to the width of the curtain rod
  • when calculating the width of the curtains, we take into account the function of the curtain and the level of gathering resulting from it
  • the level of gathering of the curtain depends on the fabric of the curtain
  • after calculating the width of the curtain, we decide whether we want it in one panel or several; if in several, we divide the obtained width by the number of panels
